POWER WORD: LIMITATIONS

Our Power Story Title Today is: The Other Side of the Gas Pump

As summer tries one last time to blast us with heat, we know that the weather is changing. The sleeves are longer and the shorts have disappeared. Errands take longer because the days are shorter and everyone has somewhere to go quickly! I was getting gas the other day and scrolling through my phone I found a photo. This is the story behind it.

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

As I said, I was getting gas the other day. I sometimes take pictures of the sign to remind myself I can be thankful when gas is less… Less than it was this day anyway. I remembered a story from just about this time of year, high in the mountains of Colorado. I was pumping my gas near Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Glenwood Springs is a resort city known for its hot springs. That is where I worked with the adults going to the Special Olympics in swimming. What an experience! The water is about 110 degrees right out of the rugged Rocky Mountains! The elevation there is 5,761 feet above sea level. This time of year, the landscape turns to every crayon color, if laid out from forest green, to fiery reds and of course the golden sunny hues from the incredible aspen trees. Higher in the mountains it had already snowed a couple of times!

Well, anyway, as I parked at the closest pump, considering it had already frozen that high in the mountains, a testament to the colors on the mountains rising in all directions, there in front of me on the other side of the pump, a mother and her son pulled up. The son (probably 10 maybe??) jumped out of the steamy warm car and ran in to prepay right before I did. I remember his small frame, tousled brown hair, and peeking from under his grey fleece hoodie, chocolate brown eyes. The remnants of summer freckles splashed across his button nose.

When I came out to my car, he was putting the nozzle in his mom’s car and clicking it locked so he could get back inside his warm car to wait. As I reached my car, I felt the chill of the evening through my own fleece jacket. Then, I saw his mom looking at me, and saying something to him. I thought maybe she was telling him something that was none of my business, so I turned toward the pump.

I heard his car door, and from the other side of the pump… he popped out, while pulling on a pair of obvious work gloves, and came around to my side and said…

It’s Too Cold…

“Ma’am it’s too cold, let me pump your gas for you”. The chill of the evening immediately melted away. I said, well of course. He motioned for me to get back into my car. As he finished pumping gas in my car FIRST, I rolled the window down to say, “Why Thank YOU! You are a real gentleman!”

The rest of his face went as red as his nose and cheeks, which hadn’t missed turning bright red from the cold. “You are welcome Ma’am, (it sounded so old… or maybe so respectful?) Have a good night!”

I sat there for a moment. It was the sweetest thing and definitely made my night.

The most important thing about this story is the very thing that brought you here. The COURAGE to BELIEVE in yourself, and be aware of what your service could mean to others!
